The Theatre of Power: Conille and the CPT in a Game of Charades

In the political circus of Haiti, the Presidential Transition Council (CPT) has staged quite the spectacle. Not content with drowning in scandal, three of its members—currently facing corruption charges—have decided to mutate into judges. Today’s question is not whether this genetic mutation is legal, but rather how far they will go to hold on to even a semblance of power.

Let’s be clear: the CPT has no authority to dismiss Prime Minister Garry Conille, but that has hardly stopped them. Pushing improvisation to new heights, these presidential advisors, tangled in corruption accusations, seem to believe they can simply replace the judiciary. The Haitian Constitution—yes, that dusty old book—plainly states that the Prime Minister can only be removed by Parliament or by his own resignation. But the CPT, unfazed, has chosen to sidestep the law with a finesse worthy of a shadow play.

And it doesn’t end there: rumors are swirling that Didier Fils-Aimé could be the next chosen Prime Minister of the CPT. The very idea would bring a smile to the statues at Champ de Mars. Fils-Aimé, an apprentice in the game of power from the private sector and known for his “talent” in reconciling rival factions, is seen by some as the ideal savior for the sinking CPT. Whether the public will quietly watch the arrival of this next actor or demand accountability remains to be seen.

What we’re witnessing here is a battle of unprecedented self-preservation. The CPT, now reduced to a compromised minority, is clinging to political survival with the flair of a magician pulling rabbits from a hat. And there stands Conille, stoic in the middle of this farce, surely wondering whether this has any basis in reality or if the dream of democratic renewal is simply evaporating in the quicksand of personal ambition.

Welcome to the grand cabaret of Haitian power, where the accused double as judges, laws bend like rubber, and the public is left searching for an exit.

Dans le cirque politique haïtien, le Conseil Présidentiel de Transition (CPT) vient de frapper un grand coup de théâtre. Non content de s’auto-dissoudre dans des scandales, trois de ses membres accusés de corruption ont décidé de muter—oui, vous avez bien lu—en juges. La question du jour n'est pas de savoir si cette mutation génétique est légale, mais de comprendre jusqu’où ils iront pour préserver un semblant de pouvoir.

À l’évidence, le CPT n’a aucune compétence pour destituer le Premier Ministre Garry Conille, mais cela n’a pas freiné ses ambitions. Poussant l’improvisation à son paroxysme, les conseillers présidentiels, pourtant empêtrés dans des accusations de malversations, pensent pouvoir remplacer l’autorité judiciaire. La Constitution haïtienne, qui, il est vrai, prend la poussière, stipule pourtant que le Premier Ministre n’est révocable que par le Parlement ou sa propre démission. Qu’à cela ne tienne, le CPT a choisi de contourner la loi avec une élégance digne d’une danse d’ombres.

Mais ce n’est pas tout : des rumeurs circulent déjà que Didier Fils-Aimé pourrait bien être le prochain choix du CPT pour occuper le poste de Premier Ministre. Cette nomination ferait sourire même les statues du Champ de Mars. Fils-Aimé, apprenti dans le jeu du pouvoir, issu du secteur privé et connu pour son « talent » à réconcilier les factions rivales, est perçu par certains comme le sauveur idéal du CPT en perdition. Il reste à voir si l’opinion publique assistera stoïquement à l’arrivée de cet énième acteur dans le spectacle, ou si elle osera demander quelques comptes.

En fin de compte, ce que nous voyons, c’est une lutte d’autopréservation sans précédent. Le CPT, réduit à une minorité embourbée, joue sa survie politique avec le même aplomb qu’un magicien sortant des lapins de son chapeau. Conille, lui, reste stoïque au milieu de cette farce, se demandant sûrement si tout cela a un fondement dans la réalité ou si le rêve du renouveau démocratique s’évapore simplement dans le sable mouvant des ambitions de chacun.

Bienvenue au grand cabaret du pouvoir haïtien, où les accusés sont juges, les lois flexibles, et le public en quête d’une issue de secours.
